Cremisan is a Monastery that was founded in 1885 in Palestine by Italian Roman Catholic Salesian Father John Bosco. It’s located on the ruins of a Byzantine monastery from the 7th century. The name derives from Cerma Mezani, which means the vineyard of grapes Zani. Cremisan is located approximately 5km  from Bethlehem and 12 km from Jerusalem. It’s situated on a hill overlooking the Cremisan Valley at approx 850 meters above sea level. In 2007, Italian winemaker Riccardo Cotarella fell in love with the estate and helped them launch a wine series featuring autochthonous grapes. Fadi Batarseh makes the wine and all decisions at the winery. Cotarella’s generosity enables locals to study enology in Italy (like Batarseh) and act as a guide. Cremisan functions as a non-profit in that it is owned by the Salesians and the wine profits go directly to operating a school and orphanage in Bethlehem.
